Nike Dunk
Nike Dunk
The Nike Dunk, a basketball shoe turned skateboarding staple, has enjoyed a full-force revival. It surpassed its original purpose as a college hoop sneaker by a long shot. Yet one thing has remained the same: The incredible ability of this shoe to unify art, fashion, music, and popular culture into one seamless whole. Want to know why? Keep on reading down below. We will break down this amazing sneaker.
What kind of Nike dunks are there?
With multiple dunk models, it’s not easy to keep the story focused on one part. We are going to break it down for your piece by piece. Starting of we have the Nike Dunk Low. Which, ironically, also has different models. But let’s keep it simple with the Nike Dunk Low first.
Nike Dunk Low
In 1985, the Nike Dunk Low was introduced. It was released in colorways matching seven of the best NCAA Division I teams in the country and marketed with the legendary “Be True to Your School” Campaign. This was only the beginning of what was coming. With now over 100+ different colorways there are a lot of Nike Dunk Lows in the market. Way more than the original NCAA Division 1 teams. Be sure to visit our Nike Dunk Low category to find your fitting Nike Dunk Low sneaker!
Nike SB Dunk Low
Nike officially launched its skateboarding division, Nike SB, in March 2002. The company tapped Sandy Bodecker to manage the new division, and under his leadership the iconic Nike SB Dunk made its debut. Nike smartly marketed its Nike SB Dunk Low as a shoe with street cred in the skateboarding community. The brand made upgrades to the original Nike Dunk silhouette, such as adding a fat tongue and additional padding, as well as elastic straps and Zoom Air soles. Nike also worked with individuals and brands that embodied skate culture ethos in order to gain more exposure for its shoes.
Nike Dunk High
The Nike Dunk High was released in 1985 as a high-top basketball sneaker, crafted out of four earlier models – the Air Force 1, the Terminator, the Air Jordan 1 and the Legend. The AF-1 inspired its traction – the outsole borrowing from the same model – and its upper was a merging of the AJ-1 and the Terminator. The Legend helped create moulds for the Dunk, but it was its backstory that gave it its unique charm.
Most Popular Dunk Releases
In the past 35+ years, we’ve seen a lot of new Nike Dunks, but which are the most popular pairs? Of course, this is up for discussion, but we can’t ignore these. The Nike SB Dunk Low “Paris”, Supreme x Nike SB Dunk Low “White Cement & Black Cement”, Staple x Nike SB Dunk Low “Pigeon”, Futura x Nike SB Dunk High “FLOM” and Diamond Supply Co. x Nike SB Low “Tiffany” are the most sought of pairs ever released.
