Air Jordan 5
History of the Air Jordan 5
The Air Jordan 5 was released in February 1990. Four models of the Air Jordan 5 were produced; two with Michael Jordan’s number “23” on the side, limited to 100 pairs each and given away to unfortunate children or auctioned off as charity. The Air Jordan 5 was the first in the line to have a clear rubber sole and was designed by Tinker Hatfield. Tinker also designed Nike Marty MacFly’s featured in the movie Back to the Future II which had clear molding allowing light to come through and that is where Tinker got his idea from. Making history
Also, the Air Jordan 5 was the first time anyone had ever molded foam into the upper of a shoe. And when you look at the Air Jordan 5, what else do you notice? What I notice is the flames on the side. Tinker came to the conclusion that Michael performed like a fighter plane. When he designed this shoe, he based it on a gray nurse shark or Supermarine Spitfire MkVIII, which is a British fighter plane from World War II. To add to these details, Tinker added a reflective 3M tongue with Jumpman embroidery.
The first Jordan in the 1990’s
Kicks nowadays will see their debut, then a week later we’ll be pummeled with every possible colorway known to humanity. But back in the early 1990s, when the Air Jordan 5 dropped, only four different colorways were released. The first Air Jordan of that decade helped set the tone for an incredible era of sneakers.
Two facts about the Air Jordan 5
- The Air Jordan 5 was revolutionary. Not only was it the first basketball shoe to be adorned with 3M, it was also the first to have a lace lock, clear outsole, and molded ankle collar.
- The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air did a lot for the Air Jordan 5, especially the ‘Grape’ iteration that was arguably the most sought-after AJ5 soon after being spotted stompin’ round Bel-Air. To celebrate Will Smith’s 50th birthday, Jordan Brand gave him two pairs of Air Jordans. Most notably, the F&F golden edition was limited to only 23 pairs.
