Air Jordan 3
Air Jordan 3
It was the Air Jordan 3 that really defined what could be done to a basketball sneaker. The first two Air Jordan sneakers have parallels to other basketball shoes released in the 1980s, such as the Air Jordan 1 and Air Jordan 2. The Air Jordan 3 broke the mold by introducing innovations such as its visible air sole and its eye-catching colors. The Air Jordan 3 was the first Air Jordan to feature Tinker Hatfield’s signature design.
First unique release
The sneaker was lighter and sleeker than the previous two models in the franchise, and Michael Jordan himself helped to shape the direction of the shoe during its development. The Jumpman logo made its first appearance on the tongue of this shoe, which also included elements like an elephant print and visible air units that are still considered iconic today. Which we know from the Air Jordan 11 memorable release too.
History of the Air Jordan 3
In 1987, Nike had trouble on the horizon. Two of its top executives, designer Peter Moore and marketing VP Rob Strasser, left the company within a week of each other and started their own brand called Van Grack. This slowed down the production of the Air Jordan 3 and made things complicated for Nike. On top of that, Jordan’s contract with the brand was coming up for renewal.
Come to the rescue
Lucky enough for Nike, a young designer named Tinker Hatfield had recently entered the picture. The former University of Oregon pole vaulter and architecture major had already enjoyed a couple of early hits with the Swoosh, including the Air Max 1 running shoe and the Air Trainer 1. Both featured revolutionary designs, helping Hatfield land the Air Jordan 3 gig. Without Tinker Hatfield on this project, we might never have even seen this release. So thanks for saving this amazing sneaker!
Most popular models
The Jordan 3 “White Cement” and “Black Cement” were released in 1988. The “Black Cement” colorway is the most popular, with five retro-ed versions. The last time they released was in 2018. The Air Jordan 3 Retro White Cement recently even got a reimagined version. The Jordan 3 silhouette is still a very popular sneaker today, released in many colorways and collaborations, such as with A Ma Maniére.
