Air Max 97
Behind the design of the Air Max 97
In the past three decades, visible Air cushioning has evolved radically. The Air Max 180 introduced 180 degrees of visible Air and was followed by the Air Max 93 which brought new blow-molding techniques into the process. Four years later, in 1997’s Air Max 97, full-length visible Air cushioning would become a reality thanks to these innovations. Nature’s most beloved resource inspired designer Christian Tresser when creating this shoe’s upper. Since then, several models have been created that would not have been possible without the Air Max 97’s creation. Innovation will continue to pave the way for future icons for years to come.
Silver bullet Air Max 97
Christian Tresser, who worked on the OG colorway of the Air Max 97, said he was inspired by the silver bullet trains from Japan. However, this explanation may not be far-fetched: The Air Max 97 was inspired by mountain bikes, not trains. The metallic surfaces of the titanium metal frame with silver aluminum finish were the key inspiration for the shoe’s silver mesh. Still, “Silver Bullet” sounds cooler than “Silver Bike,” which is why that name stuck instead.
More than a cool colorway
In addition to the outlandish amount of overlays, Tinker Hatfield designed a shoe with visible Air-units in the heel, midfoot and forefoot areas. This was a revolution for people on the running track and a big step for Nike’s technology development.
Sean Wotherspoon
Sean Wotherspoon, designed a shoe that uses an Air Max 97 upper with an Air Max 1 outsole and midsole. The multicolor corduroy upper was inspired by vintage Nike hats, and brainstorming with his close friends who are sneakerheads and have a keen understanding of what makes a great sneaker. The Air Max 97 was always one of Sean Wotherspoon’s favorite sneakers. With the endless possibilities to design this sneaker, he accepted the challenge.
