Nike Dunk High
History of the Nike Dunk High
It all starts with basketball. Basketball was the foundation for successful sneakers at the time, and it was no different with Dunk High. This shoe debuted in 1985 when college basketball had its peak and the song “We Are the World” by Michael Jackson was popular. Nike included different Air Force 1 models, the Nike Terminator, or Jordan 1 High silhouette in this design. Designer Peter Moore finally created the first colorways of Dunk High.
Based on the college basketball competition
Nike took advantage of the heated college basketball rivalry and came out with a collection of 12 colorways for major colleges. The shoe was promoted with the slogan “Be true to your school” and all fans of their college team should identify themselves from top to bottom with the colors of their team and cheer them on during the game. The Dunk High was to be called College Color High.
The Dunk in the sneaker culture
Dunk High made its way from the basketball court to the streets. It’s similar to the Adidas Superstar, which also made a breakthrough in music and movies. In 1987, it appeared on the album cover for ‘The Mix Crew’ with a Dunk High in the foreground. Dunk High also appeared in Spike Lee’s film ‘School Daze’. It really got going at the end of the 90s, when skater hype was huge and many people wore Dunk Highs. Besides hardcore fans and baseball players, these sneakers also appealed to skaters. In 2002, Nike launched its SB division.
Supreme x Nike Dunk High
In the same year, Supreme’s collaboration with Nike was launched. The first shoe of the ‘Color By’ series was from Richard Mulder and had a clean white/blue colorway. In 2005, riots broke out outside Reed Space in NYC when Pigeon Dunk was released. After that, many unforgettable collabs followed, which are worth a lot today and hardly available.
